Warren Claims

Acres: 105

Dogs: N/A

Recreation: No trail access

Description: The Warren Claims are a group of five old mining claims that are today held together under a conservation easement on the east face of Iron Mountain. They are a fine example of Wasatch sub-alpine forest and are so densely forested with sub-alpine fir and quaking aspen communities that it could be easy lose oneself in vegetation. The Warren Claims are distinctly important because they provide for a continuous big game travel corridor from Scott’s Peak to Iron Mountain and down to White Pine Lake. This corridor is moderately critical in maintaining wilderness habitat for big game and a variety of species of the Wasatch.

What You Didn’t Know: The forests on the Warren Claims are the product of the virtual deforestation that accompanied large scale mining activities of the late 19th century. By the 1880s a vast amount of wood was being used to support mines in the Park City area. As a result of the extensive logging, the forests that occupy the Warren Claims are essentially a regeneration and relatively young. Most of the trees on the property are estimated to be only about 100 years old.
