Description: This property was primarily preserved to preserve the open space surrounding one of Summit County’s most iconic historical structures, the McPolin Farm. This is a wonderful property for the whole family to visit and learn about the history this cherished icon.
In addition, the open space provides habitat for a variety of wildlife including year-round and seasonal bird use, small mammals and sometimes large game. When wildflowers carpet the property in the spring and summer months, it is not uncommon to see an assortment of nectar-feeding birds such as the broad-tailed, roufous, calliope, and black-chinned hummingbirds that all make homes on the beautiful property.
What You Didn’t Know: In the 1940s, at the height of Patrick McPolin’s ownership of the farm, the property was commonly known as the “Slaughterhouse Ranch.” McPolin operated a butcher shop on Main Street where he sold his aged and tired cattle as beef. When the animals were no longer able to produce milk, they were slaughtered in a building over the creek and behind the barn. It was said that “the creek often ran red with blood.”
